Hull City A.F.C. in European football

History

Hull's only Anglo-Italian Cup involvement came in 1973 under manager Terry Neill. The club was one of eight English participants, alongside Blackpool, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Luton Town, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Oxford United. Their first match was against a Lazio side that fielded five internationals; Hull won 2–1 at Boothferry Park on 21 February 1973 before 7,325 spectators, with goals from Ken Knighton and Roy Greenwood. A defeat away to Fiorentina followed in March, then another home victory on 4 April, when Ken Houghton and Knighton scored against Hellas Verona. The campaign ended with a goalless draw against Bari on 2 May. The tournament was discontinued after this edition due to lack of interest.

The Anglo-Scottish Cup began in 1975–76 after Texaco ended its sponsorship of the Texaco Cup. The competition used a group stage where each team played the others once, and only the group winner advanced. Hull, which had not entered the predecessor trophy, joined the inaugural edition. Placed in Group 2 of the English Qualifiers with Leicester City, Mansfield Town and West Bromwich Albion, Hull finished bottom without a win. In 1976–77, Hull competed in Group 4 alongside Middlesbrough, Newcastle United and Sheffield United, finishing third with one win, one draw and one loss. The 1977–78 tournament saw Hull again in Group 4, this time with Sheffield United, Notts County and Oldham Athletic. Hull finished last, earning a single point from a 1–1 draw with Oldham at Boundary Park.
