History

Chelsea were invited to the inaugural European Cup in 1955 after winning their first league title, but withdrew following advice from the Football League's secretary, Alan Hardaker, who argued domestic competitions should take priority. The club made its European debut three years later, entering the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup for the 1958–1960 season; their first match was a 7–2 aggregate win over Copenhagen XI. As 1970 FA Cup winners, Chelsea qualified for the 1970–71 European Cup Winners' Cup.

They eliminated Aris Thessaloniki and CSKA Sofia before overcoming a 2–0 first-leg deficit against Club Brugge with a 4–0 extra-time win at Stamford Bridge, a match Tommy Baldwin called "the best game I've ever been involved in". Chelsea then beat defending champions Manchester City in both legs and defeated Real Madrid 2–1 in a replay after a drawn final, with goals from Peter Osgood and John Dempsey, securing the club's first major international honour.

After a gap of over two decades, Chelsea returned to European competition in the 1994–95 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, reaching the semi-finals where they lost 4–3 on aggregate to Zaragoza. In the 1997–98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Chelsea won the competition for the second time, beating VfB Stuttgart 1–0 in the final in Stockholm via a second-half goal from Gianfranco Zola. As winners, they faced Real Madrid in the 1998 UEFA Super Cup; Gus Poyet scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute after coming off the bench, giving Chelsea their first Super Cup trophy.
