Venue
This was the first UEFA Super Cup held in Turkey, and the third UEFA club competition final in the country, following the 2005 Champions League Final and the 2009 UEFA Cup Final, both in Istanbul. The stadium, home of Beşiktaş, was referred to as Beşiktaş Park in UEFA materials due to naming rights regulations. An open bidding process for the 2019 Super Cup began on 9 December 2016, with associations expressing interest by 27 January 2017 and bid dossiers due by 6 June 2017. Nine associations expressed interest, and seven submitted bids. The bid evaluation report was published on 14 September 2017, and the UEFA Executive Committee selected Vodafone Park on 20 September 2017.
Background
This was the eighth Super Cup featuring two teams from the same country, previously achieved five times by Spanish sides and twice by Italian sides. It was the first Super Cup won by an English team since Liverpool in 2005. The match was the eleventh UEFA competition meeting between Liverpool and Chelsea; they had been drawn together in five successive Champions League seasons from 2004–05 to 2008–09. Chelsea had won three of those meetings, Liverpool two, with five draws (one decided on penalties in Liverpool's favour). Each side had advanced past the other twice. The teams had met twice in domestic cup finals, both won by Chelsea: the 2005 Football League Cup Final and the 2012 FA Cup Final. They also contested the 2006 FA Community Shield, which Liverpool won.
Match
Chelsea led 1–0 at halftime after Olivier Giroud scored from a Christian Pulisic pass. A Pulisic goal was ruled out for offside after VAR review. Sadio Mané equalised in the 48th minute from close range. In extra time, Mané scored again in the 95th minute, but Chelsea were awarded a penalty six minutes later when Adrián fouled Tammy Abraham; Jorginho converted to make it 2–2. The penalty shootout ended 5–4 when Adrián saved Abraham's low shot. Liverpool, as Champions League winners, were designated the home team.
