History

Norwich City's first involvement in cross-border competition came in the Texaco Cup during the 1972–73 season. They faced Scottish club Dundee in the first round, losing the first leg 2–1 but winning the second leg 2–0 to advance. In the second round, Norwich met Leicester City; after each side won 2–0 at home, Norwich progressed by winning a penalty shoot-out 4–3. The third round paired them with Motherwell, whom they defeated in both legs, setting up a two-legged final against local rivals Ipswich Town.

Norwich lost both legs of the final. The following season, 1973–74, Norwich again entered the Texaco Cup. Their first-round opponents were Scottish side St Johnstone, beaten home and away. The second round saw another meeting with Motherwell, and Norwich again won both legs.

In the third round, they faced Burnley, who eliminated Norwich 5–2 on aggregate. For the 1974–75 season, the Texaco Cup adopted a group stage for English clubs, with each team playing the others in its group once and only the group winner advancing. Norwich were placed in Group 1 alongside Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and Peterborough United. They began with a 2–1 home win over Peterborough, but then lost 5–1 at West Bromwich Albion and 2–1 at Birmingham City, finishing bottom of the group.

After Texaco ended its sponsorship, the Anglo-Scottish Cup was introduced for the 1975–76 season, retaining a similar group format but adding a Scottish qualifier round. Norwich were drawn in Group 4 of the English qualifiers with Fulham, Chelsea and Bristol City. They earned only one point, a 1–1 draw away at Chelsea, and finished last in the group. Fulham advanced from Group 4 and later lost the final to Middlesbrough.
