History

Sheffield Wednesday first entered European competition as league runners-up in 1960–61, earning an invitation to the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup the following season. They defeated Lyon and Roma before losing to Barcelona in the quarter-finals 4–3 on aggregate; had they won, they would have faced Red Star Belgrade in the semi-finals. Two years later, after a sixth-place league finish, Wednesday again competed in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. They beat Dutch part-timers DOS Utrecht 8–2 on aggregate in the first round, then fell to Cologne 5–3 on aggregate in the second round.

For the 1992–93 UEFA Cup, Wednesday qualified via a third-place finish in the 1991–92 First Division. They overcame Spora 10–2 on aggregate in the first round before losing to Kaiserslautern 5–3 on aggregate in a feisty second round. In 1995, Wednesday were invited to the inaugural Intertoto Cup and placed in Group 1. Their first match against FC Basel featured guest players, including John Pearson who had last played for the club ten years earlier, because most players were still on holiday.

Both home matches were played at Rotherham United's Millmoor as Hillsborough was unavailable. Wednesday finished second in the five-team group, which was not enough to advance.
