History
In the first round they faced SK Brann of Norway, winning 11–0 on aggregate including a 7–0 away victory at the Brann Stadion. The second round paired them with Czechoslovak side ŠK Slovan Bratislava; a 3–3 draw at Tehelné pole and a 5–2 win at Loftus Road sent QPR through. West German club 1. FC Köln were the third-round opponents. A 3–0 home win for Rangers was followed by a 4–1 defeat at the Müngersdorfer Stadion, but QPR advanced on the away goals rule. In the quarter-final they met AEK Athens of Greece. QPR, by then the last remaining English club in the tournament, won the home leg 3–0, but AEK matched that score at the Nikos Goumas Stadium. The match went to penalties, and the Athens club won 7–6, eliminating QPR.
A fifth-place finish in the 1983–84 season earned QPR a second UEFA Cup campaign, with Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur also qualifying for the 1984–85 tournament. Their first opponents were Icelandic club Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur. A 3–0 away win at KR-völlur in Reykjavík and a 4–0 'home' win—held at Arsenal Stadium because of the artificial turf at Loftus Road—saw QPR progress to face Yugoslavian club FK Partizan. Rangers won the home leg 6–2, but a 4–0 loss in Belgrade meant Partizan progressed on the away goals rule.
English clubs were banned from European competition after the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985. The ban lasted until 1990–91, and England did not regain its pre-1985 number of places until 1995–96. As a result, the teams finishing fourth and fifth in the 1992–93 season—Blackburn Rovers and QPR respectively—missed a place in the 1993–94 UEFA Cup.
