Reception

Reviewers offered mixed assessments. Matt Thrower of IGN praised the reveal turns, resource pyramid dilemma, strategic depth, and accessibility, but criticized the art as serviceable, the originality, scalability, and abstract combat. He concluded the game was impressive and accessible. Charlie Hall of Polygon recommended the game, praising its deck-building accessibility, engagement, and companion app, and unlike Thrower, praised the single-player mode.

George Barker of Dicebreaker called the mechanics extremely familiar but the game a satisfying sum of its parts, noting that the combination of worker placement and deckbuilding works. He found the choice of 22 action spaces daunting for new players, critiqued limited deck-building and constricted solo mode card choices, and found combat disappointing due to lack of subterfuge and luck of the draw. Luke Plunkett of Kotaku praised the worker placement but criticized the basic abstract wooden components and the theme, calling it a different game with the license papered over.

The game was nominated for the 2022 Kennerspiel des Jahres, with the jury praising it as a clever enhancement of worker placement, and placed third in the Deutscher Spiele Preis.

Expansions and spinoffs

An expansion, Rise of Ix, was published in late 2021. A second expansion, Immortality, followed in late 2022. A third expansion, Bloodlines, announced in August 2024, was released in January 2025 and is compatible with both Dune: Imperium and Dune Imperium: Uprising. In 2023, the standalone game Dune Imperium: Uprising was released, acting as an alternative to the original and compatible with Rise of Ix and Immortality.
