Plot summary

CHOAM’s Ur-Director, Malina Aru, finds that her son Jaxson has stolen the organization’s hidden records on the Great Houses, and that Leto Atreides has joined Jaxson’s cause. Viscount Giandro Tull supplies Jaxson’s group with advanced shield nullifiers, but Emperor Shaddam retaliates by dispatching Colonel Bashar Japati Kolona and the Sardaukar to annihilate House Tull after the Viscount kills his own thoroughbred horses with poison. Glossu Rabban and Piter de Vries torture Gurney Halleck, extracting Leto’s plan to infiltrate the Noble Commonwealth.

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Rabban’s uncle, promises Jaxson secret melange shipments in return for being named Emperor, yet also alerts Count Hasimir Fenring to Jaxson’s location on Arrakis. Fenring then kills his Mentat, Grix Dardik, for trying to inform the Emperor about the Baron’s scheme. Thufir Hawat secretly reaches Lankiveil and frees Gurney from the Harkonnens. Leto gives Wellington Yueh a new recording to explain his actions.

After the Baron exposes Leto’s involvement, Shaddam orders Kolona to wipe out both House Atreides and House Londine. Kolona destroys House Londine, personally slaying Rajiv Londine on Cuarte. House Londine’s Chief Administrator, Rodundi, who had arranged their part in the Caladan ailar drug trade, is exposed as a Face Dancer serving Tleilaxu Master Arafa. He escapes to Nossus, wearing Rajiv’s face, and joins Jaxson.
