Doctor Gero's Red Ribbon Androids and their successors.
The Androids of Dragon Ball are artificial humanoids created by Doctor Gero, chief scientist of the Red Ribbon Army, to continue the army's vendetta against Goku after its defeat. The best known, Androids 17 and 18, became recurring characters.

Lore & Background
Androids 17 and 18 are siblings; when Gero releases them as a last resort, 17 turns on him and kills him. Android 16 is a fully mechanical android modeled on Gero's dead son Gevo and, unlike the others, can sense power levels. Toriyama created 17 and 18 after his former editor Kazuhiko Torishima was disappointed with Androids 19 and 20 as villains.
Reader's Guide
Super Hero also reveals that Android 21's human base is Vomi, Gero's wife. Android 17's real name, revealed by Toriyama in 2014, is Lapis.
Androids 17 and 18 hunt Goku, are absorbed by Cell and later return; 18 settles down with Krillin. In Dragon Ball Super, 17 works as a forest ranger, and both join Universe 7's team in the Tournament of Power. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, a revived Red Ribbon Army has Gero's grandson Dr. Hedo build new androids, including Gamma 2 and Cell Max.
