Lore & Background
The Saiyans came from Planet Vegeta, which Frieza destroyed; Goku was sent to Earth as a baby just before. A Saiyan with a tail can turn into a giant ape, the Ōzaru, by looking at a full moon. Toriyama only made Goku a Saiyan once fighters from other planets entered the story, and he created the Super Saiyan transformation during the Frieza arc to show a massive power-up.
