The Pale

The grey nothingness between the isolas of Elysium.

The Pale is the mist-like substance that separates the isolas, the masses of land and sea that make up the world of Elysium. The laws of reality break down inside it; long exposure can lead to mental instability and eventually death, so crossing it, usually by aerostatics, is tightly regulated.

Background

The fan wiki puts it at 72% of the known surface of Elysium and says it has no colour, smell or features, so it can only be measured through the matter around it. In the game Ruby uses a radio-wave device normally meant for crossing the Pale against the detectives, and the Insulindian Phasmid hints to Harry that the Pale results from human perception and self-reflection and threatens to swallow the world.
