Lidström was the first European-born-and-trained captain to win the Stanley Cup (2008). He is the all-time leader in games played with a single NHL team by a European-born player. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2002, though he was not the first European to receive the honor—Henrik Zetterberg became the first European-born-and-trained player to win the Conn Smythe in 2008.
