Detroit Red Wings

After a first-round upset by the Los Angeles Kings the previous season, the Red Wings added forwards Luc Robitaille and Brett Hull, goaltender Dominik Hasek (the defending Vezina Trophy winner), and Russian prospect Pavel Datsyuk in the offseason. They finished with the league's best record at 116 points, winning the Presidents' Trophy and the top seed. In the first round, they lost the first two games at home to the eighth-seeded Vancouver Canucks but won four straight. They then defeated the fourth-seeded St. Louis Blues in five games. In the Western Conference Finals, they faced the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche. After losing Game 5 at home in overtime, Hasek posted shutouts in Games 6 and 7, including a 7–0 win in Game 7, to return to the Final for the fourth time in eight years.

Stanley Cup engraving

Commissioner Gary Bettman presented the Stanley Cup to Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman after Detroit's 3–1 win in Game 5. Manny Legace's name was misspelled as MANNY LEGECE; an 'A' was stamped over the second 'E' twice to correct it. Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan became the second and third players to win an Olympic gold medal (with Canada) and the Stanley Cup in the same year. Chris Chelios and Brett Hull became the first to win an Olympic silver medal (with the United States) and the Stanley Cup in the same year. Ten players won their third Stanley Cup with Detroit. Several players were left off the Cup, including Maxim Kuznetsov (39 regular-season games), Uwe Krupp (8 games), Sean Avery (36 games), Jesse Wallin (15 games), Ladislav Kohn (4 games), and Jason Elliott (never played in the NHL). All 10 players and non-playing personnel in the team picture received Stanley Cup rings.
