Walman was drafted 82nd overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2014 NHL entry draft. He played junior hockey with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens and collegiate hockey at Providence College. He signed an entry-level contract with the Blues in 2017 and made his NHL debut in the 2019–20 season. On March 21, 2022, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. He was re-signed by the Red Wings to a one-year contract in August 2022 and later to a three-year extension in February 2023. On June 25, 2024, he was traded to the San Jose Sharks. On March 6, 2025, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers.

Walman is a Jewish Canadian-American defenceman. He holds American citizenship through his mother. He attended the U.S. junior national team camp but was ruled ineligible for the IIHF World Juniors due to not meeting residency requirements. He was invited to the Canadian junior camp but did not make the team. He was invited to play for Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Championship but withdrew due to injury.
