The Flash
The Scarlet Speedster: a mantle passed between DC's fastest heroes.
The Flash is a mantle carried by several DC Comics speedsters. Writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert created the original, Jay Garrick, who debuted in Flash Comics #1 (cover-dated January 1940). Every Flash draws super-speed from the Speed Force, which lets them run, think and react far faster than any human. At least five characters have held the name: college athlete Jay Garrick, forensic scientist Barry Allen, Barry's nephew Wally West, Barry's grandson Bart Allen and Avery Ho. Each has served on at least one of DC's main teams, the Justice Society of America, the Justice League or the Teen Titans. The 1961 story "Flash of Two Worlds", in which Jay Garrick met Barry Allen, introduced the Multiverse to DC readers. Recurring foes include Gorilla Grodd, the Rogues and the evil speedsters called Reverse-Flash and Zoom.
