Authentication is the act of proving an assertion, such as the identity of a computer system user. In contrast with identification, which indicates a person or thing's identity, authentication is the process of verifying that identity. The process of authentication can be divided into three broad types. The first type relies on accepting proof from a credible person with firsthand evidence of an item’s genuineness.
