Mitsuko Uchida is a Japanese-English classical pianist and conductor. Born in the seaside town of Atami, near Tokyo, she moved to Vienna at age twelve when her diplomat father became Japan’s ambassador to Austria. The youngest of three children, she studied at the Vienna Academy of Music under Richard Hauser, later working with Wilhelm Kempff and Stefan Askenase, and gave her first Viennese recital at the Musikverein at fourteen. She also studied with Maria Curcio, the last pupil of Artur Schnabel. When her father was reassigned to Japan after five years, Uchida remained in Vienna to continue her training.
In competition, she placed tenth at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1968, won first prize in a 1969 competition, second prize at the 1970 International Chopin Piano Competition, and second prize at the 1975 Leeds Piano Competition. She is renowned for interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy, and Schoenberg. Her complete recording of Mozart’s piano sonatas won a Gramophone Award in 1989, and her Schoenberg Piano Concerto recording with Pierre Boulez earned another. She has recorded all of Mozart’s concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra and Jeffrey Tate, and later began a second complete cycle conducting the Cleveland Orchestra from the keyboard, winning a Grammy in 2011 for concertos nos. 23 and 24. She also recorded Beethoven’s complete piano concertos with Kurt Sanderling, Beethoven’s late sonatas, and a Schubert cycle.
Uchida was artist-in-residence for the Cleveland Orchestra from 2002 to 2007, leading all Mozart solo concertos, and for the Berlin Philharmonic in 2010. She has conducted the English Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard. At the Marlboro Music School and Festival, she was senior artist in 1974 and 1992, joined the artistic direction committee in 1994, became co-artistic director with Richard Goode in 1999, and sole director until 2018, when Jonathan Biss became co-artistic director. She is a founding trustee of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. Honours include appointment as Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2001, promotion to Dame Commander in 2009, an honorary doctorate from Oxford in 2009, the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal in 2012, and the Gold Medal of the Mozarteum Foundation in 2015.
