The Chipettes
Female chipmunk trio from the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise.
Last updated
The Chipettes are a fictional girl group from the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise, consisting of three female anthropomorphic chipmunk singers: Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor, alongside their adoptive human mother, Beatrice Miller. They first appeared in the animated television series Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1983 and later starred in their own right, with the show's title changing to simply The Chipmunks in 1988 to reflect their prominence. The group was created by Janice Karman, who voiced them in the television series and the 1987 film The Chipmunk Adventure.
Origins
The Chipettes originated from the 1982 album The Chipmunks Go Hollywood, which featured a duet between Alvin and a female character named Charlene the Chipette, depicted with a long golden blonde ponytail and considered the basis for Brittany. Janice Karman stated that she created the Chipettes because she and Ross Bagdasarian Jr. could not perform girl songs and wanted female chipmunks with contrasting personalities to the main three.
Brittany was the first Chipette created in 1982. In the film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, the Chipettes were redesigned as more realistic chipmunks and voiced by Christina Applegate, Anna Faris, and Amy Poehler. These actresses reprised their roles in Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (2015), with Kaley Cuoco replacing Amy Poehler as Eleanor in the latter.
Discography
The Chipettes' discography primarily consists of featured appearances on Alvin and the Chipmunks recordings, with the exceptions of the 1987 soundtrack The Chipmunk Adventure and the 1988 album The Chipmunks and the Chipettes: Born to Rock. Their first album appearance was The Chipmunks Go Hollywood in 1982, followed by Songs from Our TV Shows in 1984. Subsequent releases include Solid Gold Chipmunks: 30 Years of Great Hits (1988), Rockin' Through the Decades (1990), The Chipmunks Rock the House (1991), Chipmunks in Low Places (1992), and various other albums through the 1990s and 2000s. They also appear on soundtracks for the live-action films, such as Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2009) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2015).
