Dorothy Ann Hudson is one of the eight children in Ms. Valerie Frizzle's class who board the magic school bus on field trips to unusual times and locations, such as the Cretaceous Period, outer space, and inside a human body.
History
The Magic School Bus book series, which introduced Dorothy Ann and her classmates, began with the 1986 publication of The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks. The concept was developed by Scholastic Co. vice-president Craig Walker, who combined the idea of science with fictional stories and drew inspiration from his own school field trips and a former teacher. In 1994, the franchise was adapted into an animated television series by Scholastic Entertainment and Canadian animation studio Nelvana, premiering on PBS on September 10, 1994, as the network's first fully animated series.
The series was later picked up by Fox Kids Network in 1997 for their after-school block. Scholastic Entertainment president Deborah Forte saw the adaptation as a way to help children learn science in a fun manner, amid concerns about improving science education for girls and minorities. Ms. Frizzle, voiced by Lily Tomlin, served as a female expert host in a field where accomplished women were exceptions. A subsequent animated series, The Magic School Bus Rides Again, premiered on Netflix in 2017, and Scholastic announced a newer CGI series for preschoolers featuring a bus named Albie, Ms. Frizzle, Liz, and six-year-old children Lily, Wyatt, and Benny.
Educational impact
The Magic School Bus was among shows funded by the National Science Foundation, whose funding criteria required gaining learner interest, ensuring engagement, and impacting education. The franchise provided educators with resources and curricula blending science education with entertainment, making concepts accessible for young learners to absorb information and enhancing science education.
