She is one of the eight named class members featured in the Magic School Bus franchise, which originated as a book series and later became an animated television series.
History
The Magic School Bus book series began with the 1986 publication of The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks, created by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. The concept was developed by Scholastic Co. vice-president Craig Walker, who combined the idea of science fiction with educational content, drawing inspiration from his own school field trips and a former teacher. In 1994, the franchise was adapted into an animated television series by Scholastic Entertainment and Canadian animation studio Nelvana, premiering on PBS on September 10, 1994, as the network's first fully animated series.
The theme song was performed by Little Richard. In 1997, the series was picked up by Fox Kids Network for their after-school block, which had faced criticism for lacking educational value; the show was seen as a positive step toward educational programming. Scholastic Entertainment president Deborah Forte noted that the adaptation aimed to help children learn science in a fun way, addressing concerns about science education for girls and minorities.
Ms. Frizzle was voiced by Lily Tomlin. A follow-up series, The Magic School Bus Rides Again, premiered on Netflix in 2017. Scholastic later announced a preschool CGI series featuring a bus named Albie, along with Ms. Frizzle, Liz, and new six-year-old children named Lily, Wyatt, and Benny.
Educational impact
The Magic School Bus was among shows funded by the National Science Foundation, which required creators to engage learners and impact their education. The funding drove innovation, allowing the franchise to promote science and inspire future interests. Educators used the franchise's resources and curricula to combine science education with entertainment, making concepts accessible for young learners.
