Robert Jeffrey "Bobby" Hill is a fictional character on the Fox/Hulu animated series King of the Hill, voiced by Pamela Adlon. He is the only child of Hank and Peggy Hill.

Character biography

Bobby Hill was born on August 13 in Arlen, Texas. He is 4'11" and overweight for his age. A school-aged boy, he enjoys comedy, music, dance, and socializing with friends Joseph Gribble and Connie Souphanousinphone. Though his father and peers sometimes find him odd, Bobby has a remarkable talent with people, especially girls, who find him cute and entertaining.

Inept at sports and uninterested in them as a spectator, he is innocent, gentle, amicable, and good-natured. He aspires to be a prop comic like his hero "Celery Head" and a "ladies' man." Bobby displays natural talent as a marksman. He is generally passive and occasionally bullied, but maintains high self-esteem.

Cotton Hill expresses genuine affection only for Bobby, consistently supporting him. Bobby ages from 11 to 13 over the series, turning 12 in "Shins of the Father" and 13 in "I Don't Want To Wait For Our Lives To Be Over." In the 2025 revival, he is 21.

Character analysis

Bobby is not talented as an athlete or craftsman like his father, though he shows skill as a golfer and shooter. Hank doubts Bobby's masculine identity and normalcy, often lamenting "That boy ain't right." Bobby is capable of physical anger, as when he twice punched the taller Joseph for kissing Connie. He is saddened by his father's lack of appreciation for the arts and comedy.

The two struggle to find common interests but eventually bond over Texas, meat, propane, target shooting, hunting, and golfing. Over time, Hank expresses "that boy ain't right" far less, and despite differences, they have a close relationship; Bobby considers his father his hero. Bobby's savant knack with shooting is a talent Hank does not have. Writer Norm Hiscock described Bobby as a sensitive boy open to things, while Hank was more close-minded, making Bobby drive him crazy, which he called the heart of King of the Hill.

Reception and legacy

The London Free Press stated Bobby "arguably was the most interesting, complex and in some ways 'real' kid in TV." Pamela Adlon received an Emmy for her role in the episode "Bobby Goes Nuts," the only performer in the series to win one for their role. IGN editor Talmadge Blevins described Bobby's line "That's my purse! I don't know you!" as one of the most memorable ever uttered on television. In 2002, TV Guide ranked Bobby Hill number 48 on its "50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time" list.
