Geography and history
The formations are believed to be over 270 million years old.[2] The Yi people’s legend says the forest is the birthplace of Ashima, a beautiful girl.[3] Roughly 270 million years ago, the region that is now the Stone Forest was covered by a shallow sea.[4] After those materials were laid down, the land was pushed upward.[4]
The limestone pillars were later sculpted by the action of wind and flowing water.[4] Yi people hold the Torch Festival annually on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, featuring folk dances and wrestling.[3]
