He played in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Bullets, and later served as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, and Philadelphia 76ers. He also briefly coached the New Jersey Nets, the predecessor to the Brooklyn Nets.

On March 4, 2025, he served as designated survivor during Trump's address to Congress, and again during the 2026 State of the Union. On March 5, 2025, he announced 72,000 jobs (15% of department employees) would be terminated.
