Shipwrecked (TV series)

A reality series of survival, competition, and island life.

Shipwrecked is a British reality television programme that aired on Channel 4's youth programming brand T4 between 2000 and 2012, beginning as a social experiment without competition or prizes. It later adopted a competitive format as Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands, with two teams vying for a cash prize, and was revived on E4 in 2019 before being cancelled due to low ratings.

Original series

The first series aired from 12 January to 1 March 2000, spanning nine episodes. Sixteen contestants aged 18 to 24 were stranded on Moturakau in the Cook Islands for 68 days and 67 nights, after which a sailing boat picked them up. Participants included Elliot Dell, Dan Woodrow, Jack Krelle, Jessica Pearson, William, Rachel, Megane Quashie, Mandy Dassa, Star Hart, Lisa Norton, David, Jen, Ashna, Simon Babbage (Crusoe), Darrell (Paddy), Will Chapman, and Andy. By the end only seven remained; others had left for the mainland of Aitutaki, and Jess departed in week 5 to sail the South Pacific. The series relied on trial and error, with a pig slaughtered in week 4, chickens killed, and fish, snails, clams, and octopus caught by hand. High tides flash-flooded the island around weeks 3–4, and from that period onward pairs made weekly canoe trips to the mainland for vegetables and fruit. Andrew Lincoln narrated. The second series ran for 13 episodes from 18 January to 28 February 2001, set in Tonga, with a boot camp-style audition process. Some contestants stole food from the producers' tent, and a group of girls formed their own camp. The third series, 16 episodes from 5 November to 19 December 2001, took place in Fiji. Contestants included Jeff Brazier and Chloe Everton, later known from other reality series and Sky Sports News respectively, and Sarah-Jane Crawford, later a BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ and MTV presenter. The cast was more international, with participants from Australia and the United States, and the series was also called Shipwrecked International.

Battle of the Islands

The fourth series, titled Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands 2006, aired from 8 January to 14 May 2006. Executive producer Tania Alexander and director Dee Koppang oversaw all four series from 2006 to 2009. This format differed from the original, resembling Survivor rather than a documentary-style social experiment. Two teams, the Sharks and the Tigers, lived on the uninhabited Pacific islands of Moturakau and Rapota, both part of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. Craig Kelly narrated. Each week a new contestant arrived, spending half the week with each team before choosing which to join. The team with the larger membership at the end of the five-month run shared a £70,000 prize. Contestants could leave at any time or nominate themselves to switch teams at the weekly beach party; if the other team voted to accept them, they swapped islands. If two or more from one island nominated themselves, the rival island could accept only one per week. Each island needed a minimum of five people, and nominations were allowed only when an island had six or more. Contestants were limited to two island moves during the series. In the final week, both islands had 14 inhabitants, and the last new arrival, Jenni Danns, chose Shark Island, awarding the Sharks the £70,000. The editors highlighted attempts by the Tigers to persuade a Shark named Jo to switch, but she declined, stating she could not leave her sharkies.

The Island (2011–2012)

Channel 4 confirmed the show's return on 19 May 2011 with a 15-episode run and a back-to-basics theme, moving away from the Battle of the Islands format. A look-back special aired on Channel 4 on 23 October 2011, and Shipwrecked: The Island launched on E4 on 25 October 2011, airing Tuesdays at 8pm until 31 January 2012, with no episode on 20 December 2011. Craig Kelly narrated this fifth and final series, as the T4 brand was axed in December 2012.
