In February 2022, Ant & Dec performed in drag on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway. The positive reaction to that performance, along with the success of RuPaul's Drag Race UK on BBC Three, was reported in May as a factor in ITV commissioning Queens for the Night. The show was officially announced in June 2022 and created by Tuesday's Child. ITV entertainment head Katie Rawcliffe stated the show would have 'all the wow factor you would expect from this wonderful celebration of drag'.
