History
RuPaul's Drag Race originated in the United States and has been adapted internationally. The show seeks a drag superstar with charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. In 2014, Jonathan Ross was reportedly in talks to host a UK version with Jodie Harsh and Katie Price as a judge, but production halted in April 2014 due to family issues. In 2015, Ross and Price assisted RuPaul in a one-off search for a UK Drag Race Ambassador, won by The Vivienne, who received a trip to the American set. Michelle Visage, while on Celebrity Big Brother, expressed interest in a UK version, and Channel 5 showed interest in 2018. In June 2018, producers hinted at a British version, and Fenton Bailey confirmed a meeting with the BBC, stating that something was coming.
Format
RuPaul serves as host, coach and judge, introducing guests, announcing challenges, and revealing eliminations. He offers guidance and critiques performances. The competition uses progressive elimination from an initial ten contestants down to a final three, with the final two lip-syncing for the crown. Each episode includes a mini-challenge, a main challenge, a runway walk, a judging panel, a lip-sync battle, and an elimination. Most lip-syncs feature songs by UK-based artists. A spin-off podcast, RuPaul's Drag Race UK: The Podcast, hosted by Scarlett Moffatt and Baby Lame, airs on BBC Sounds. Mini-challenges vary, such as a green-screen photo shoot or a reading challenge inspired by Paris Is Burning. The winner of a mini-challenge may gain an advantage in the main challenge.
