Contract Mark

A pentagram on the right eye sealing a pact between a demon and his master.

Ciel Phantomhive bears a pentagram on his right eye, which is usually covered by a black eye patch. This mark signifies the Faustian contract he made with the demon Sebastian Michaelis. In return for Ciel's soul, the contract allows him to summon and give orders to Sebastian. The contract mark is also located on Sebastian's left hand, allowing him to find Ciel whenever Ciel's mark is exposed.

Lore & Background

Ciel made this Faustian contract with Sebastian after being enslaved by a cult and scheduled for ritual sacrifice. During a session where his twin brother was sacrificed, Ciel summoned Sebastian instead of the cult, commanding the demon to kill everyone in the room. The mark on Ciel's right eye (usually covered) is the sign of this pact, which binds Sebastian to serve as a demonic butler until Ciel exacts revenge upon those who humiliated and tortured him and killed his family. In return for fulfilling these orders with great loyalty and swiftness, Ciel promises his soul. The contract mark on Sebastian's left hand allows the demon to locate Ciel whenever the master's mark is exposed, ensuring he can appear at a moment's notice.

Reader's Guide

The mark on Ciel is located on his right eye (covered by a black eye patch), while Sebastian's mark is on his left hand. This connection allows Sebastian to find Ciel wherever he is whenever Ciel's contract mark is exposed. The primary function of this seal is to enforce the terms: Sebastian must serve ten-year-old (later thirteen-year-old) Earl Ciel Phantomhive to exact revenge upon specific people. Once Ciel's revenge is achieved, Sebastian will consume his soul as payment. Ciel made the contract after his twin was sacrificed, binding Sebastian to kill the cultists and later serving as a bodyguard.
