Lore & Background

Set four years after The Last of Us (2013), the game focuses on two playable characters in a post-apocalyptic United States: Ellie, who sets out in revenge for Joel's murder, and Abby, a soldier who killed Joel and becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult. The plot follows Ellie and Dina as they pursue Abby to Seattle, while Abby's story involves her search for Owen and her rescue of Seraphite siblings Yara and Lev. The game ends with Ellie sparing Abby after a fight, and the two part ways.

In Their Own Story

Ellie stands in the rain-soaked streets of Seattle, her grip tightening on a makeshift weapon as she recalls Joel's final moments. Shadows loom ahead, but she presses forward, driven by a need for closure that may never come.

Reader's Guide

The player can use long-range weapons such as rifles and bows, and short-range weapons such as pistols and revolvers. Melee weapons like machetes and hammers are limited-use. Items can be used to upgrade weapons at workbenches or craft equipment such as health kits, Molotov cocktails, and makeshift silencers. Supplements upgrade skills in a skill tree; training manuals unlock additional branches. Stealth options include crouching behind obstacles and crawling in a prone position. 'Listen Mode' locates enemies as outlines through walls. Guard dogs track the player's scent, visualized in Listen Mode. Player companions assist in combat.
