For most of its early history Bayern wore white and maroon at home. The 1968-69 season brought red and blue striped shirts with blue shorts and socks, and from 1969 to 1973 the team wore red and white stripes with red or white shorts and red socks. After a single season in an all-white kit with one vertical red and one blue stripe, Bayern settled from 1974 on a mostly all-red home kit with white trim.

Away kits have ranged across white, black, blue and gold-green, and Bayern also fields a distinct international kit. In 2013-14, for instance, the home shirt was all red with a Bavarian-flag diamond watermark, the Oktoberfest away kit was a Lederhosen-inspired white and black, and the international kit was all navy.

The red and blue stripes came back between 1995 and 1997, and in 1997 blue dominated for the first time when Adidas produced an all-navy home kit with a red chest band. Bayern returned to a predominantly red shirt with blue sleeves in 1999, and in 2000 released a traditional all-red kit with white trim for Champions League matches. Between 2001 and 2003, and again in the 2006-07 Champions League, the club wore a Rotwein-coloured home kit that nodded to its first-choice colours before the late 1960s.
