Bayern Munich was founded in 1900 by eleven players led by Franz John. The club won its first national championship in 1932. After World War II, Bayern became a member of the Oberliga Süd. In 1963, the club was not selected for the newly formed Bundesliga, but achieved promotion in 1965. The pinnacle came in the 1970s under Franz Beckenbauer's captaincy, winning the European Cup three consecutive times (1974–1976).
