In Their Own Story

The most contentious chapter began in 2000 when the clubs agreed to share a new stadium for the 2006 World Cup. After 13 years in lower leagues, 1860 returned to the top flight in 1994 and won their first derby since 1977 in 1999. However, Bayern soon regained control with massive wins like 5–1 in 2001 and 5–0 in 2003. In 2005, both moved to the Allianz Arena, but one year later, 1860 relegated to the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga. Tensions peaked just before a match when unknown Bayern fans painted parts of 1860's traditional home, the Grünwalder Stadion, in red and white. After 1860 dropped to the Regionalliga Bayern in 2017 due to investor Hassan Ismaik's refusal to pay fees, Bayern ended the ground-sharing arrangement on July 12, 2017.
