Caen Basket Calvados, a men's basketball club from the commune of Caen in northwestern France, currently plays in LNB Pro B, the country’s second division. The team traces its roots to 1959, when the older Stade Malherbe Caennais basketball section dissolved in September of that year. Roughly 80 percent of that club’s members joined the newly formed Caen Basket Club (CBC), a move intended to preserve players and administrative continuity. Early results were promising but uneven. In 1960, Caen BC finished third in the top-tier National Championship 1 A, but suffered relegations in 1964 and 1969, each followed by promotions in 1966 and 1970. The 1970s marked the club’s peak. It first entered European competition in 1971 and gradually stabilized at the highest level of French basketball. Under president Guy Chambily from 1976 to 1979, the team finished on the podium every season, losing two finals—to ASVEL in 1977 and to Moderne in 1979. In 1978, the club reached the semifinals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, finishing third after elimination by Italian side Sinudyne Bologna.
The late 1980s brought decline. Renamed Caen Basket Calvados in 1982, the club was relegated from the top division after the 1988–89 season. Several failed attempts to return followed, and in 1997 a 16th-place finish combined with financial troubles forced a demotion to National 4, the fifth tier. Rebuilding from the bottom, the team climbed back to National 3 in 1998 and National 2 in 1999. Since 2013, the club has been supported by NBA player Nicolas Batum, and in May of that year it hired Hervé Coudray as coach. The most recent major achievement came in 2017, when Caen won the third-level Nationale Masculine 1 (NM1) championship, earning promotion to Pro B.
Over 31 seasons in the elite division, the club—known at various times as Stade Malherbe Caen, Caen CBN, Caen BC, and Can Horses—recorded 355 wins, 18 draws, and 357 losses in 730 games. Notable players include Rashad Davis, Jeremiah Mordi, and Nemanja Calasan.
