BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque
French professional basketball club based in Gravelines.
Basket Club Maritime Gravelines-Dunkerque, known as BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque, is a French professional basketball team from Gravelines. It competes in the LNB Élite, France’s top-tier league. The squad used to play at the Sportica arena until it was destroyed by a fire on December 24, 2023.
In the summer of 2012, the club signed Dwight Buycks, who later became a franchise icon. He played alongside Ludovic Vaty, JK Edwards, Ousmane Camara, and Yannick Bokolo, forming one of the best rosters in team history. That season, Gravelines did not contend for the league title and exited in the round of 16, but it captured the Leaders Cup (formerly the Semaine des As) for the second time.
The 2020–21 campaign was tough, with COVID-19 disruptions and injuries to key players like Erik McCree and Briante Weber. However, the hiring of head coach JD Jackson brought enough wins to keep the team in the top division. For the 2021–22 season, the club extended Jackson’s contract and added Vafessa Fofana, Marcquise Reed, Brandon Taylor, and Dominik Olejniczak. That year, they reached the semifinals of the Coupe de France and finished 12th in the league.
Ahead of the 2022–23 season, the team brought in several new players, including JaJuan Johnson and DJ Seeley. After 11 games, though, the club parted ways with Jackson and signed Laurent Legname, formerly of Bourg. Legname lifted the team from 15th place in November to as high as 8th. Only two players left, and Kenny Boynton replaced Seeley, who returned to the EuroLeague with Bayern Munich. Legname’s squad pushed for a playoff spot on the final day against SLUC Nancy but lost at home by a few points, sending Strasbourg into the 8th seed.
BCM first qualified for a European competition in 1990, entering the Korac Cup. They reached the second round, where they lost to Spanish side CB Estudiantes after two memorable games. In the 2002–03 season, the club competed in the EuroCup and produced one of the best runs of that inaugural edition. They took part in the FIBA Europe Cup preliminary round in 2007–08 and automatically qualified for that competition in 2009–10 and 2010–11. The 2011–12 season marked their first-ever appearance in the EuroLeague qualifying round, where they fell to ASVEL, and they then played in the EuroCup that same year.
