AS Monaco Basket

AS Monaco Basket, often shortened to AS Monaco or just Monaco, is a professional basketball club based in Monaco but registered in France. It belongs to the larger A.S. Monaco sports club, which started in 1924; the basketball team came along four years later, in 1928. The club’s biggest European achievements are winning the EuroCup in 2021 and being the runner-up in the EuroLeague in 2025. Domestically, they have claimed three French League titles, two French Cups, four Leaders Cups, and one French Supercup. Their home games are held at Salle Gaston Médecin. As of the 2026–27 season, Monaco plays in the French third-tier Nationale Masculine 1 after being excluded from the top division LNB Élite due to financial troubles.

The basketball section was founded in 1928, about four years after the parent club A.S. Monaco. One of its early highlights was finishing second in the top French league, Nationale 1 (now LNB Élite), after the 1950 season. In 1973, Monaco won the LNB Pro B (second division) championship, boasting one of Europe’s most powerful offenses. They moved up to Nationale 1 for the 1973–74 season, placing ninth. Their first European outing came in the 1974–75 FIBA Korać Cup (the third-tier competition), where they were eliminated in the group stage by teams like ASVEL Basket, Levski Sofia, and AMG Sebastiani Basket. They returned to the same tournament in 1982–83, reaching the Top 16 group stage but losing to Dynamo Moscow in the semifinal qualification round.

During the 1980s, Monaco built a reputation as a dangerous team in French basketball. They reached the French Federation Cup final, losing 96–81 to Limoges CSP. In the LNB Élite, they became a threat after former NBA player Robert Smith joined in 1985; Smith was named MVP of the 1987 French League All-Star Game. After Smith left, the team declined, getting relegated to the second division and eventually dropping to the Nationale 1. They stayed out of the top flight for many years. In 2014, Monaco won the third-tier Nationale Masculine 1 (NM1) championship, earning a return to LNB Pro B. The next season, 2014–15, they won the Pro B title and finally moved back up to LNB Pro A.

In 2015, Ukrainian businessman and philanthropist Sergey Dyadechko became the club’s president. That same season, Monaco won the 2016 French Pro A Leaders Cup, beating Élan Chalon 99–74, with Jamal Shuler named MVP.
