Super Bowl XLVII decided the champion of the 2012 NFL season. The AFC champion Baltimore Ravens beat the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers 34-31 on Sunday, February 3, 2013, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, handing the 49ers the first Super Bowl defeat in their history.

The game was nicknamed the Har-bowl because, for the first time in a Super Bowl, two brothers coached against each other: John Harbaugh for the Ravens and Jim Harbaugh for the 49ers (Jim's son Jay was on the Ravens' staff). Both teams arrived unbeaten in previous Super Bowls, the Ravens 1-0 and the 49ers 5-0. It was the seventh Super Bowl in the Superdome, the tenth in New Orleans, equalling Miami's record, and the first there since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The 49ers, 11-4-1 in the regular season, had been seeking a sixth title to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers.
