The writers chose Mars as both the spark for the civil war and the staging ground for its conclusion so viewers would grasp the conflict better than with an anonymous colony around a distant star. Michael Garibaldi's former romantic interest Lise Hampton dates from his time on the Mars colony, and the wealthy businessman William Edgars controls much of its economy.
