Disharmonic Orchestra was formed in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1987 by Patrick Klopf (guitars, vocals) and Martin Messner (drums). The band recorded two demos before a gig in Germany with Pungent Stench led to a deal with Nuclear Blast in 1989. Their first release under that deal was a split EP with fellow Austrians Pungent Stench. After two full-length albums on Nuclear Blast, they signed with Steamhammer and released a third album, 'Not the Last... But the First' (1994), which sounded rather different from the previous ones.
The band took a break in 1994 that lasted until 2003, when their debut album Expositionsprophylaxe was re-issued and they released a new studio album titled Ahead. After another long break, they released Fear of Angst in October 2016. In January 2023, the band issued a compilation album of early demos, EPs, and previously unreleased recordings, entitled Repulsive Overtones? 1988-1989, on F.O.A.D. records.
