Diablo Swing Orchestra was created in 2003 as a sextet. The original line-up consisted of singer Lisa Hansson, guitarists Daniel Håkansson and Pontus Mantefors, bass guitarist Anders 'Andy' Johansson, cellist Johannes Bergion, and drummer Andreas Halvardsson. They released their first EP, Borderline Hymns, in 2004; two years later, Hansson left the band, and was replaced by AnnLouice Lögdlund. With Lögdlund, the band released their first album, The Butcher's Ballroom, in 2006. During recording, the band realized that some parts did not fit Lögdlund's voice; as such, Håkansson became the band's co-lead singer, with Mantefors also occasionally providing lead vocals.

Each release carried its own creative rituals. For the second album, the band documented studio sessions through cryptic video blogs and commissioned Swedish illustrator Peter Bergting—known for The Portent—to design the cover art. Two Special Edition digipak variants were offered to pre-order buyers; the Limited Edition was capped at 300 copies and included a numbered dog tag embossed with the band's logo. Sing Along Songs earned a nomination in the Eclectic Album category at the 10th Annual Independent Music Awards in January 2011, with "A Tap Dancer's Dilemma" also nominated in the Metal/Hardcore category. Pacifisticuffs, recorded between July and October 2016, was delayed a full year by mixing difficulties before landing on December 8, 2017, drawing particular critical praise for vocalist Kristin Evegård's performance.

The Human Churn Behind the Music

No discussion of DSO is complete without acknowledging the remarkable turnover in their lineup over the years. Within the first three years, original singer Lisa Hansson was replaced by AnnLouice Lögdlund. Drummer Andreas Halvardsson departed in January 2010 for personal reasons, succeeded by Petter Karlsson, best known from Swedish metal act Therion. Yet Karlsson's tenure lasted barely two years; by March 2012 he had announced his exit, citing a desire for greater artistic input and the pull of his own projects. Johan Norbäck, who had filled in during the ongoing tour, became the permanent drummer. In August 2014, Lögdlund and the band mutually parted ways as her opera career demanded increasing time, and Kristin Evegård was named her successor. Despite this constant reshuffling, the core creative engine—Håkansson, Mantefors, Johansson, and Bergion—remained intact, allowing DSO to keep evolving while the supporting cast rotated.
