Benevolent was founded by brothers Hadi Sarieddine and Fadi Sarieddine in May 2007 under the name Eminence, initially as a cover band. In 2008, they released their first single 'Solace'. The band underwent lineup changes in mid-2009 with the addition of Adel Al-Qattan on guitars and Bader Nana on drums, and soon began writing original material. After releasing 'Augmented' in early 2010, both Al-Qattan and Nana departed.

The band entered the studio in December 2009 to work on their debut EP 'Divided', which was released on November 5, 2010, exclusively for free download on Bandcamp. The EP featured five songs including 'Haunting Shores' and 'The Tyrant', showcasing a move toward the djent style. In January 2011, Mohammed Gad joined on bass guitar, and the band confirmed shows in the Middle East. A music video for 'Clairvoyant Transmission' debuted on July 10, 2011.

Benevolent's first full-length album 'The Covenant' was released digitally on March 18, 2014, independently. Andols Herrick, formerly of Chimaira, served as guest drummer. The album was produced by Hadi Sarieddine at Haven Studio and mastered by Acle Kahney at 4D Sounds.
