Creation
Gege Akutami created Yuta and Rika as a combo before envisioning the manga's publication. The name Okkotsu appealed to the author, while Yuta was chosen for its kanji meaning "One With Many Friends." Akutami was inspired by Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto, comparing Yuta and Rika's curse to Naruto Uzumaki and the nine-tailed demon fox, with both pairs becoming allies. While Yuta makes peace with Rika's curse in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Akutami aimed for a different dynamic in Jujutsu Kaisen, where protagonist Yuji Itadori is constantly mocked by antagonist Ryomen Sukuna. Akutami never intended Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School to be serialized, as Yuta's arc was its sole focus. When Jujutsu Kaisen was created, Yuji became the lead while Yuta became supporting. Similarities between the two include their introduction to jujutsu, tragedy, naivety, and facing death, though Itadori is outgoing while Yuta is reserved.
Characterization and themes
Yuta is the main focus of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, whose narrative centers on his growth since Rika's death. The theme involves Yuta's need to accept her death, and he is seen as emotionally ambiguous in how he deals with his feelings for her. His loneliness stems from being chased by Rika's curse. In the film adaptation, Megumi Ogata gave Yuta a sensitive characterization, describing him as attractive because he becomes stronger through interacting with others. Though initially appearing weak, Ogata's performance gives him a stronger impression. Rika's curse represents how Yuta can use major power for good. The film expands on Yuta's personal weaknesses from illness and rejection of his surroundings; he realizes he and his peers are accepted through their interactions. His reluctance to accept Rika's death parallels Yuji Itadori's need to accept his grandfather's death. Yuta finds salvation in Gojo, who guides him in controlling Rika and avoiding isolation. His growth makes him appealing as he stops wanting to kill himself and starts appreciating life. His hero's journey advances through physical growth, with Maki training him to stand alone. Despite early passivity, Yuta shows aggression when friends are wounded by Suguru Geto. Fighting Geto and confronting Rika's curse allows Yuta to accept death and recover from trauma. Kayleigh McKee was moved by Yuta's motivational speech about being cherished by his classmates. McKee considered Yuta more mature in later appearances, and he is noted as a composed teenager who keeps trust in Gojo. He shares close connections with former partners, mostly Maki, though no romance exists between them.
Appearances
Yuta Okkotsu is the protagonist of Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, retitled Jujutsu Kaisen 0, initially a cursed victim haunted by Rika's spirit. Satoru Gojo enrolls him at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, where he befriends Panda, Maki Zen'in, and Toge Inumaki. On his first mission, a wounded Maki motivates Yuta to fight, allowing him to briefly control Rika. After months of training, he learns to control his cursed energy and becomes a skilled swordsman. The power of Rika attracts Suguru Geto, who attacks Yuta and his friends. Enraged, Yuta unleashes Rika's curse, promising to join her if she helps him defeat Geto. Yuta overwhelms Geto, who escapes after losing an arm. It is revealed Rika did not curse Yuta; after her death, Yuta's desire to make her survive accidentally turned her into a curse spirit. Yuta frees Rika, and she departs to the afterlife. In a December 2021 chapter, Yuta's group has part-time jobs in a store. The animated film adds a scene where Yuta befriends one of Geto's former allies. In Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuta is mentioned by Gojo as an upper-level student who may surpass him. Upon returning to Japan, Yuta saves a child from a spirit surrounded by a replica he calls Rika. He returns as an executioner of Yuji for possessing Ryomen Sukuna, avenging Inumaki. Yuta defeats Yuji and Choso, pretends to kill Yuji, and reveals himself as an ally to the revived Yuji.
Reception
In a March 2021 Viz Media popularity poll, Yuta was voted the eighth-most-popular character in the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise, a position he held again in a December 2021 Weekly Shōnen Jump poll. His outfit was added to the NetEase game Knives Out, and a figurine of Yuta holding Rika was released. A replica of his sword was also produced. Yuta's Expansion Domain against Sukuna, revealed in February 2024, became a hot topic, nicknamed "Unlimited Blade Works" by the fandom due to similarities with a dimension from Fate/stay Night. After the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film, /Film listed Yuta as its third best character. In the Anime Trending 2022 poll, he ranked eighth in the Boy of the Year category and second in the Best Male Character award from Animages 2022 Anime Grand Prix. In the Newtype Anime Awards, he reached sixth place for Best Male Character. Jaime Pérez de Sevilla and Nicolás Artajo won the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards for best Spanish and German voice actors for Yuta, and Pedro Alcântara was a nominee for Portuguese voice acting. Yuta's appearance in the anime's second season finale was praised, becoming a hot topic on social media, with praise for his redesign and animation. McKee posted an "apology form" in January 2024 due to negative responses from the fandom. A Jujutsu Kaisen 0-themed cafe event ran in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya from August 29 to October 27, 2024.
