Gameplay
The player controls Spud as he ascends Far Tower, fighting enemies with a projectile weapon. Gaining 100 experience points grants a level and additional health. Rescued allies can be switched to during exploration, each with unique abilities; Arnie Eggplant wields a boomerang with longer range than Spud's weapon. Each tower floor may contain maze-like areas, enemies, puzzles, cinema scenes, power-ups, characters with tips, or a combination. Keys open doors, stairs lead to the next floor, and some floors feature reversed controls, holes, or intermittent darkness. Select floors have a boss fight that generates a password. A Versus Mode requires two copies of the game and a Game Boy Link Cable, letting players choose a tower round and control all four playable characters, with the goal of rescuing the princess first.
Story
King Vegitan the Fifth, a tomato who rules the Vegetable Kingdom, decides it is time for his daughter Princess Mato to marry. This plan embarrasses her. Suddenly, a demonic beetle named Devi, who represents the Devil, attacks the castle and kidnaps the princess, taking her to his own castle. Terrified, the king orders two knights, Arnie Eggplant and Gerrit Carrot, to rescue her. They set out but never return. A lonely wanderer named Spud then volunteers to go to Devi's castle and find the king's daughter. Grateful, the king gives Spud his blessing. On his journey, Spud rescues both Arnie and Gerrit, who join him to finish what they started. In the castle's first floor, Spud meets Terry Turnip, a friend of Arnie's. When Arnie dies saving Terry from falling rocks, she takes his place in the group. In a scene only in the Japanese version, Devi's sister convinces him not to attack Spud. Eventually, Spud faces Devi alone and wins, but Devi reveals he was serving a master named Dodorian. Dodorian kills Devi for helping Spud's group, but Spud then defeats Dodorian too. Spud rescues the princess and returns her to the king. He says he must leave and continues wandering. Princess Mato calls after him and decides to go with him, ending the game.
