Gameplay
Bomberman Fantasy Race is a 3D racing game with two single player modes and a two player mode. Players choose one of six Bomberman characters and then select a creature to ride, choosing between two types: Louie or Tirra, with six variants of each available. Before a race, players purchase items at a shop using prize money. The main single player goal is to finish ahead of four CPU-controlled opponents. Prize money, called Bomberman coins, is awarded for finishing at least third; first place grants access to a bonus course for more coins and unlocks a mirrored version of that course. In two player mode, players bet money on the race, with the winner taking the loser's bet; the player with the least money decides if a bet can be placed. Time Attack Mode lets players race against the clock, posting fastest lap and course records, and allows saving ghost data for study or exchange. Players can store and exchange coins in a bank, which has ten boxes with blue lights indicating coins and red lights when full. One hundred Copper coins exchange for one Silver coin, and ten Silver coins for one Gold coin; full safes trigger automatic exchange. Coins buy new creatures at the stable, items, and courses. During races, players can throw or drop bombs, use a bomb dash for acceleration, dash with stamina for limited time, or perform a triangle jump off walls. Panels on courses provide random items that help or hinder. Eggs found on courses can be held up to three; a Louie gains a speed boost from eggs, while a Tirra forms a protective barrier against bomb explosions.
Reception
The game received mixed reviews according to GameRankings. IGN stated that although it lacks a speedy adrenaline rush and does not push technical limits, it is a good time. Game Informer gave an above-average review nearly two months before the US release. Next Generation noted that stiff digital controls and tough tracks make it a choice for fans and racing veterans only. Famitsu scored it 26 out of 40.
