Run Saber

Two cyborgs fight mutants and a rogue Saber.

Horisoft developed Run Saber, a side-scrolling action game for the Super Nintendo, which Atlus published. It reached North America on June 8, 1993, and Europe later that year. Players control the Run Sabers, two heroes named and Sheena, fighting to save the planet. Its gameplay resembles Strider, Valis, and parts of Psycho Dream. Despite a mostly-Japanese team, the game never released in Japan.

Did You Know?

Gameplay

Players choose between Allen, who has a lightning affinity, or Sheena, who has an ice affinity. Allen's slash attack strikes forward, while Sheena's strikes upward. The player can also perform a mid-air kick, use a Hyper Bomb power-up, climb walls, hang from ceilings, and execute a power jump similar to the Screw Attack from Super Metroid. The five levels—Taj Base, Tong City, Jodvalley, Grey Fac, and Bruford—each contain multiple minor bosses and a final boss, announced by an on-screen alert. Between boss fights, the player fights enemy hordes and collects health pickups and weapon enhancers.

Plot

In a future where Earth is heavily polluted and resources are scarce, a scientist creates a chemical meant to reverse the pollution. When launched into the atmosphere, the chemical instead mutates any humans it infects, and the scientist uses the mutated people as soldiers to rule Earth. Humanity's hope lies in Project Saber, three genetically enhanced cyborgs. The first Saber, Kurtz, malfunctions and escapes to Earth before completion. The remaining Sabers, Allen and Sheena, are sent to eliminate the scientist and his mutant army, and to neutralize Kurtz if possible.
