Jane X. Luu (born July 1963) is a Vietnamese-American astronomer and defense systems engineer. She fled Vietnam as a refugee in 1975 during the fall of Saigon, living in refugee camps and motels before settling in Kentucky with relatives. She graduated high school as valedictorian, earned a physics degree from Stanford University in 1984, and worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which sparked her interest in astronomy.

As a graduate student at UC Berkeley and MIT, Luu studied connections between asteroids and comets for her PhD. With David C. Jewitt, she spent five years searching for objects in the Kuiper Belt, a region once thought empty. In 1992, using a telescope on Mauna Kea, they found the first known Kuiper Belt object beyond Pluto and its moon Charon, later named 15760 Albion and nicknamed “Smiley.” She received the Annie J. Cannon Award in 1991, a Hubble Fellowship in 1992, and her PhD from MIT that same year. The asteroid 5430 Luu is named for her.

After her doctorate, Luu became an assistant professor at Harvard in 1994 and later a professor at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She then returned to the U.S. to work on defense-related instrumentation at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, focusing on lidar systems. In 2004, she and Jewitt reported crystalline water ice and signs of ammonia hydrate on Quaoar, then the largest known Kuiper Belt object, theorizing the ice formed underground and was exposed by a collision.

Luu shared the 2012 Shaw Prize with Jewitt for discovering and characterizing trans-Neptunian bodies, and the 2012 Kavli Prize with Jewitt and Michael Brown for discovering and characterizing the Kuiper Belt and its largest members, advancing understanding of planetary system history.
