Mary Watson Whitney (1847–1921) was an American astronomer who directed the Vassar College Observatory for more than two decades, overseeing the publication of over one hundred scientific papers. Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, to a wealthy real estate businessman and his wife, she received a strong education for a woman of her era. After excelling in mathematics at public high school, she entered Vassar College in 1865, where she met astronomer Maria Mitchell. During her studies, Whitney’s father died and her brother was lost at sea; she earned her degree in 1868. Because Harvard University did not admit women, she attended Benjamin Peirce’s lectures on quaternions and celestial mechanics as a guest from 1869 to 1870, also volunteering at the Harvard College Observatory. She became the first president of Vassar’s alumnae association in 1871 and earned a master’s degree there the following year. She then spent three years in Zürich studying mathematics and celestial mechanics.

Returning to the United States, Whitney taught at Waltham High School from 1876 until 1881, when she became Mitchell’s assistant at Vassar. Upon Mitchell’s retirement in 1888, Whitney assumed the professorship and directorship of the observatory, a role she held until 1915 due to health issues. Her research and teaching focused on double stars, variable stars, asteroids, comets, and photographic plate measurements. In 1889, her mother and sister fell ill; Whitney moved them into the observatory to care for them while continuing part-time work. After their deaths two years later, she returned to full-time duties. She was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a charter member of the Astronomical and Astrophysical Society. In 1902, she became the first president of the Maria Mitchell Association on Nantucket. Whitney advocated for women in science, arguing that fields like practical chemistry, architecture, dentistry, and agriculture were lucrative and suited to women, and that scientific training also prepared them for motherhood. In 1908, she raised funds for a female research fellow at the new Maria Mitchell Observatory. Upon retiring, she lived at the observatory until 1915.
