Lyman Spitzer Jr. (1914–1997) was an American theoretical physicist, astronomer, and mountaineer. Born in Toledo, Ohio to a Presbyterian family, he was a descendant of inventor Eli Whitney through his paternal grandmother. After graduating from Scott High School, he attended Phillips Academy and then Yale College, where he earned Phi Beta Kappa honors and was a member of Skull and Bones. A year at St John’s College, Cambridge, exposed him to the influence of Arthur Eddington and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. He completed his Ph.D. in physics at Princeton University in 1938 under Henry Norris Russell, with a dissertation on the spectra of late supergiant stars.

Spitzer’s academic career at Yale was interrupted by wartime sonar development. In 1947, at age 33, he succeeded Russell as director of Princeton University Observatory, a role he shared with Martin Schwarzschild until 1979. His research focused on the interstellar medium and plasma physics; in the 1930s and 1940s he was among the first to recognize star formation as an ongoing process. He authored the standard texts *Diffuse Matter in Space* (1968) and *Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium* (1978). He conceived the idea of space-based telescopes in 1946, later championing the project that became the Hubble Space Telescope. He invented the stellarator plasma device and founded Project Matterhorn, which became the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. In 1981 he was a founding member of the World Cultural Council.

As a mountaineer, Spitzer made the first ascent of Mount Thor on Baffin Island with Donald C. Morton in 1965. A member of the American Alpine Club, he established the Lyman Spitzer Cutting Edge Climbing Award, now the Cutting Edge Grant, which provides $12,000 annually to several expeditions. He died suddenly on March 31, 1997, after a regular workday at Princeton, and was buried in Princeton Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Doreen, four children—including neurobiologist Nicholas C. Spitzer—and ten grandchildren. Numerous honors include the Bruce Medal, Henry Draper Medal, National Medal of Science, Crafoord Prize, and the namesake Spitzer Space Telescope.
