Tianwen-1 (天问一号, also called TW-1) is a Chinese interplanetary mission that sent a robotic spacecraft to Mars. The spacecraft, built by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and managed by the National Space Science Centre in Beijing, consists of six elements: an orbiter, two deployable cameras, a lander, a remote camera, and the Zhurong rover. With a total mass of nearly five tons, it is among the heaviest probes ever sent to Mars and carries 14 scientific instruments. It is the first mission in CNSA's Planetary Exploration of China program.

The mission aims to study Martian surface geology and internal structure, search for evidence of past or present water, and characterize the planet's space environment and atmosphere. China's Mars program originally began in partnership with Russia: in November 2011, the Russian Fobos-Grunt spacecraft, carrying China's Yinghuo-1 orbiter, launched from Baikonur but failed to leave Earth orbit, reentering the atmosphere in January 2012. China then started an independent Mars project in 2014, formally approved in 2016.

On 14 November 2019, CNSA invited foreign embassies and organizations to witness a hovering and obstacle avoidance test for the Mars lander—the mission's first public appearance. In April 2020, the mission was officially named Tianwen-1, after a poem by Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) whose title means "Questions to Tian" (the sky or heavens). The rover was named Zhurong, after a Chinese mytho-historical figure associated with fire and light, chosen through an online poll from January to February 2021.

The spacecraft launched from Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on 23 July 2020 atop a Long March 5 heavy-lift rocket. During its seven-month cruise, it performed four trajectory correction maneuvers, an additional inclination adjustment, and self-diagnostics on its payloads. In September 2020, it deployed the Tianwen-1 First Deployable Camera (TDC-1), a small satellite with two cameras that photographed the orbiter and lander's heat shield and tested radio contact; its trajectory was predicted to fly by Mars around orbit insertion.
