After a bright start, a run of nine matches without a win dragged them to 15th, but they then went 12 matches unbeaten and lost only two more games all season to finish sixth. They also reached the FA Cup final for the first time in 43 years, losing 1–0 to Chelsea in the last game at Wembley before the old stadium was rebuilt.
