The 1993 FA Cup Final vs Sheffield Wednesday

A 1–1 draw and a 2–1 extra-time replay win completed Arsenal's domestic cup double.

The 1993 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday was played at Wembley. The first match, on 15 May, ended in a 1–1 draw. Arsenal won the replay on 20 May, 2–1 after extra time.

This victory gave Arsenal their sixth FA Cup title, their first since 1979, and made them the first English club to complete a domestic cup double, having already won the 1993 League Cup final. For Sheffield Wednesday, it was their first FA Cup final appearance since 1966. They had also reached the League Cup final that season, losing 2–1 to Arsenal in a single match. The two clubs meeting in both domestic cup finals in the same season had never happened before, and would not occur again until 2022. Sheffield Wednesday have not reached a domestic cup final since, though they have made two League Cup semi-finals.

The replay marked the final Arsenal appearance for veteran defender David O'Leary. He left soon after for Leeds United, ending an 18-year spell at the club that included 722 competitive games and six major trophies.

In the original match, Ian Wright headed Arsenal ahead in the 20th minute. Sheffield Wednesday equalised in the 61st minute when David Hirst turned in a low drive past goalkeeper David Seaman.

The replay's kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes because a motorway accident held up most of Sheffield Wednesday's fans. Ian Wright again scored first for Arsenal, running onto a through ball and prodding it past Chris Woods into the corner. It was his fourth goal in FA Cup finals at Wembley, one behind record-holder Ian Rush. Wednesday pushed back in the second half, and a Chris Waddle shot deflected off Arsenal's Lee Dixon into the net in the 68th minute. The match went to extra time. With two minutes left in the second period, central defender Andy Linighan headed in a Paul Merson corner. Goalkeeper Chris Woods fumbled, and Graham Hyde could only help the ball into the top of the net. Linighan had played most of the game with a broken nose after Mark Bright struck him in the face with an elbow.

This was the first time the same two clubs had contested both domestic cup finals in a season. It was also called the 'longest' FA Cup final: the replay went to extra time, was delayed by 30 minutes, and came within one minute of the first ever penalty shoot-out in an FA Cup final. It was the last final to be decided by a replay; from 1999, all finals would be settled on the day. Squad numbers were used for the first time in an FA Cup final, having been trialled in the League Cup final; players kept the same numbers for all three matches. The system was fully adopted by the Premier League the following season.

For Arsenal, David O'Leary played his last two official matches for the club, having joined as an apprentice in 1973. His testimonial took place between the final and the replay, on 17 May. During extra time in the replay, Alan Smith received the only yellow card of his professional career.
