Battle of the Buffet (2004) vs Manchester United

The 2004 defeat at Old Trafford that ended Arsenal's 49-match unbeaten run.

The "Battle of the Buffet", also known as "Pizzagate", was a Premier League match between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford on 24 October 2004. Arsenal had much of the early play, but Manchester United were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute when Wayne Rooney was judged to have been fouled by Sol Campbell; Ruud van Nistelrooy scored it and Rooney added a late second for a 2-0 win. The result ended Arsenal's record-breaking 49-match unbeaten run.

In the tunnel afterwards a brawl broke out between staff of both clubs and a slice of pizza was thrown at Sir Alex Ferguson; Cesc Fabregas, then 17, admitted in 2017 that he threw it. Arsene Wenger was later fined 15,000 pounds by the Football Association for his post-match comments, and Van Nistelrooy was banned for three matches for a challenge on Ashley Cole. Arsenal, league leaders going into the game, were five points behind Chelsea by December.
