Arsenal were voted into the newly expanded First Division in 1919, after the First World War, and have remained in the top flight ever since: the longest active streak in the top division of any English club.

The club had first been promoted to the First Division in 1904. When the division was enlarged by two clubs after the war, the places were decided by a vote of the clubs. Arsenal won a spot that could have gone to 20th-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who went down instead, and the North London rivalry escalated.
